Former minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dubem Onyia dies at 73

Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia, has died at the age of 73.

His family announced in a statement on Tuesday that he died on March 10, 2025, after a brief illness.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hon. Chief Dubem Onyia, a distinguished statesman and former Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs,” the statement read.

The family described him as a devoted public servant who left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s diplomatic relations.

“His tenure was marked by unwavering commitment to national interest, which remains his legacy,” they added.

Onyia is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings and numerous relatives, political associates and friends.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, described Onyia’s death as a major loss to the state and the nation.

“Ndi Enugu received with a deep sense of grief and loss, the passing of statesman and former Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Gideon Onyia,” Mbah said in a statement.

He praised the late minister as a “distinguished leader, fine diplomat, patriot, and consummate public servant” who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s growth.

Onyia served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He was also a former member of the House of Representatives and held key positions, including chairman of the International Technical Commission for the National Boundary Commission and chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission.

Additionally, he was a trustee of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation.
