Former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Prof Humphrey Nwosu has died aged 83.
Nwosu died on Thursday in a hospital in Virginia, United States.
He was appointed NEC chairman by former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
Under Nwosu’s leadership, the NEC conducted what was adjudged the most credible presidential election in Nigeria which was presumably won by Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). But the election was annulled by Babangida.
Born on October 2, 1941 in Anambra, the professor of political science brought a few innovations into the nation’s electoral process. One of such was the introduction of Option A4 voting system and the open ballot system.
The Option A4 was a direct queuing behind candidates of choice during either party primaries or general elections.
The professor chaired the NEC from 1989 and 1993.
