Former national secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jola Ogunlusi, has died at the age of 91. His family announced his death in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement signed by Gbenga Aruleba on behalf of the family, Mr Ogunlusi, fondly known as ‘Papa Jola,’ died peacefully on Saturday morning after a brief illness.
“With profound sadness but utmost gratitude to God for a fulfilled and well-spent life, the Ogunlusi family announces the passing of our beloved Patriarch, Father, Grandfather, and Uncle, Mr. Jola Ogunlusi, who departed this life on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 9:54 am. He was aged 91,” the statement read.
Mr. Aruleba highlighted Ogunlusi’s significant contributions to journalism, community development and humanity. A distinguished journalist, Ogunlusi was celebrated for his dedication, loyalty and commitment to justice and equity during his tenure as NUJ national secretary in the 1970s.
In addition to his journalism career, Ogunlusi was deeply involved in community development. As president of the FESTAC Town Residents Association, his efforts, alongside others, contributed to the creation of the Amuwo Odofin Local Council Development Area (LCDA). He also served as chairman of the community development council in Amuwo Odofin, where his dedication to the community’s growth and welfare left an enduring impact.
The family described him as “a kind, loving, and caring man” whose legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness will continue to inspire his family, friends, and community.
“Our Daddy really impacted our lives and the lives of countless others in ways that cannot be overstated. His legacy will continue to live on in our hearts,” the statement added.
The family noted that burial arrangements will be announced soon and requested prayers, condolences, and support during this difficult time.
