Dr. Victor Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s distinguished technocrats, has died at the age of 89.
He died in the early hours of Sunday, few months ahead of his 90th birthday.
A statement signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family, titled ‘Victor Olunloyo Goes Home’, confirmed his death.
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo,” it read.
Olunloyo, a revered mathematician and engineer, served briefly as governor of the old Oyo State from October to December 1983.
He was the first governor of the state from Ibadan and remained an influential figure in Nigerian public service long after his time in office.
Beyond politics, Dr. Olunloyo made a lasting impact in education and public administration.
He was the pioneer Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic and held other high-profile appointments over the years.
He also held traditional titles, including Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife.
The family noted that Olunloyo had been battling age-related health challenges in recent weeks.
They expressed their deep grief but also pride in his enduring legacy, describing his life as one of service to the nation and humanity.
Arrangements for a befitting burial are currently underway.
The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss and prepare to lay the statesman to rest.
