Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has celebrated her latest movie A Tribe Called Judah becoming the first Nollywood film, to hit one billion naira in the cinema.
Film One Studios confirmed that the movie is officially the highest-grossing film in a statement released on Thursday.
Funke also shared the good news on her Instagram account and thanked everyone for their support.
She wrote: “Thank you LORD!!! Thank you NIGERIA!! Thank you GHANA!! #atribecalledjudah is showing in the Uk!! Check these ODEON CINEMAS: (STREATHAM, SURREY QUAYS, MANCHESTHER GN, GREENWICH, BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET, LEE VALLEY, SHEFFIELD).”
Fellow celebrities like Chioma Akpotha, Uche Jombo, Omoni Oboli, Juliana Olayode, Nse Ekpe-Etim, Uzee Usman, Adunni Ade Mo Abudu, and Eniola Ajao congratulated her in the comment section of the post.
A Tribe Called Judah hit the cinemas on December 15, after its premiere at the Imax Cinemas on December 10.
The film has also beaten Funke’s previous movies Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Battle on Buka Street to become the actress’ biggest opening film and also the number one overall film in Nigeria and West Africa.
Directed by Adeoluwa Owu and Funke, A Tribe Called Judah tells the story of a family of boys, who decide to rob a mall to raise money for their mother’s hospital bill. However, on getting there, they are faced with armed robbers.
The film features Funke Akindele, Juliana Olayode, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Jidekene Achufusi, Nosa Rex, Uzee Uzman, Timini Egbuson, Tobi Makinde, Faithia Williams, Uzor Arukwe, Yvonne Jegede, Ebele Okaro and others.
