Funke Akindele’s latest film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, has made history as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie, earning a staggering N1.466 billion at the Nigerian box office and still climbing.
Filmone, the movie’s distributor in a collaboration post on Tuesday announced the milestone on Instagram, calling it a “record breaker.”
They wrote: “Everybody Loves Jenifa has officially hit a historic 1.466 Billion Naira and counting at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of all time!
”A massive THANK YOU to our incredible audiences in Nigeria and Ghana for making this dream a reality! Your support is everything. On to even greater heights! Still showing in cinemas near you—experience the magic on the big screen.”
Funke also took to social media to thank her fans, particularly in Nigeria and Ghana, for their support.
She urged them to help her achieve her next target of N2 billion.
This achievement is another testament to Funke Akindele’s unparalleled success in Nollywood.
Her 2020 film, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, set a record by grossing N636,129,120, which she surpassed in 2021 with Battle on Buka Street, earning N668,423,056.
In 2023, A Tribe Called Judah broke further ground, becoming the first Nollywood movie to cross the N1 billion mark with N1,404,187,806.
Everybody Loves Jenifa, a spin-off of her widely loved Jenifa franchise, explores new challenges faced by the titular character, including dealing with a rival who threatens her charity work and public image.
Featuring a stellar cast that includes Patience Ozokwor, Jide Kosoko, Nancy Isime, Omowunmi Dada, Tobi Makinde and Falz, the film has struck a chord with audiences.
