A senior presidential spokesman Garba Shehu has apologised for his misleading information that only 10 students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina were abducted on December 11.
No fewer than 344 schoolboys were rescued from bandits who took them to Zamfara. The students arrived Katsina on Friday.
Mr Shehu said his information at the time about 10 boys were from sources that should “ideally know”. He added that it was not his intention to downplay the seriousness of the incident.
“I apologize for the incorrect communication citing that only 10 students were kidnapped at the science school, Kankara,” he wrote in a post across social media platforms.
“This communication of numbers was provided by persons that should ideally know. These numbers were seen to conflict with what was available at that time.
“Please understand that this communication was in no way done to downplay the seriousness of the situation.
“Please accept my sincere apologies on this matter as we continue to move our great Nation Nigeria forward. Thank you.”
President Muhammadu Buhari, who is presently in Katsina on a week-long private visit, met the schoolboys on Friday.
