Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has opened the doors for Obafemi Martins’ long-awaited return to the national fold.
Martins, 33, has only played four times since 2010 for his country, with his last two appearances coming in 2015.
Despite his consistent displays, the ex-Inter Milan forward was continually overlooked throughout the FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
However, that could change according to the Franco-German tactician ahead of the World Cup.
Martins has been in spectacular form, hitting 16 goals in 39 appearances for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League (CSL).
His last goal came in the Chinese FA Cup victory over Shanghai SIPG on Sunday.
“Yes, the door is open to all our best players, including Martins.” Rohr told KweséESPN on Wednesday.
“He is scoring a lot of goals and we need to get competition for all the positions, especially centre-forward.
“For now, we have Kelechi [Iheanacho] who is playing not all the time. [But] we played with Kelechi against Argentina and he did well.
“Then Anthony [Nwakaeme] also did well against Algeria and [Odion] Ighalo, who is injured now, did very well against Cameroon.
“But we have also other players, like the young boy [Victor] Osimhen, and we have to look everywhere.
“We have a lot of opportunities for the strikers, and so Martins, if he is scoring goals, will be welcome.”
Martins boasts a respectable goalscoring record at international level, netting 18 in 41 appearances.
