Edward “Shaka” Kakembo, the Ugandan boxer lined up to fight Nigeria’s Waidi “Skoro” Usman for the African Boxing Union featherweight title at the GOtv Boxing Night, has declared he will beat his opponent to the title.
Kakembo, billed to arrive Lagos on Wednesday for the tournament holding at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos on 26 December, said the fact that the fight is taking place in Nigeria will offer no advantage to his opponent.
“I will win the African title and the cash prize for the best boxer of the tournament to make my fans back home very happy at this period. It is their Christmas gift. They deserve it and I will not disappoint,” said the Ugandan Professional Boxing Commission champion and knockout specialist.
GOtv Boxing V, as the edition is tagged, will make the biggest payout in Nigerian boxing history when the cheque for the cash prize is handed out on Boxing Day.
The event will feature two other title fights and a national challenge duel.
One of the national title fights is in the light welterweight division, which will see rising star, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, attempt to dethrone the incumbent, Sadiq “Police” Machine. In the other one, Stanley “Edo Boy” Eribo will fight Sunday “Capo” Olalekan for the national welterweight title. The challenge bout, in the super middleweight division, will see Sunday “Golden Child” Ajuwa take on Rasheed “Afonja Warrior” Abolaji.
The event, which kicks off at 5pm, is sponsored by GOtv and supported by MultiChoice, SuperSport, Newsbreak.ng, KSquare Security, Paragonis Multimedia Limited, Brila FM, Bond FM and Complete Sports. The fights will be broadcast live on SuperSport in 47 African countries.
