Video entertainment company, GOtv, was Thursday unveiled as the shirt sponsor of Glo Premier League newcomers, Ikorodu United Football Club. The sponsorship package was unveiled at the formal launch of the club, which won promotion after just one season in the Nigerian National League, at the Ikorodu Town Hall.
Ikorodu United FC will have three strips for home, away and continental engagements.
In attendance at the ceremony were members of the board and management of the team, led by Mr. Adewunmi Ogunsanya, Chairman of Ikorodu United and MultiChoice Nigeria, promoters of GOtv; Chairman, Lagos State Football Association, Mr. Seyi Akinwunmi; ex internationals, Peter Rufai, Waidi Akanni, Victor Aghali and Ifeanyi Udeze, players and coaches of the club among many other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Ogunsanya said GOtv, which already is synonymous with professional boxing in Nigeria through the GOtv Boxing Night, chose to be the club’s shirt sponsors because the company sees sport as a major way of offering an outlet for the energy of the youth population of the country. He explained that the club’s rapid rise to the top-tier of the domestic game deserves to be rewarded with adequate financial and organisational support, which GOtv will provide.
Ogunsanya, however, cautioned that promotion is just the beginning, advising that the management and players of the club need to meet the challenge that, inevitably, will be provided by the higher standard of the Glo Premier League.
The chairman also called on supporters of the club to remain steadfast in giving their support so that the club’s profile could grow further. He expressed hope that the club will participate in the CAF Champions League within a very short time.
Executive Vice Chairman of the club, Mr. Babs Akindele, advised the players to double their efforts and assured them that the club will open the way to the prestigious leagues of Europe to players who marry skill with good comportment. Ex-internationals present also advised the players to be disciplined so as to realise their potential.
