Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has joined in echoing support for England skipper, Wayne Rooney.
The Manchester United captain risks being stripped of his Three Lions captaincy after photos emerged in the week where the 31-year-old was alleged to be drunk in a wedding celebration.
Guardiola, 45, capped 47 times for Spain and seven times more for Catalonia during his playing career, says he too occasionally has been drunk.
“I was an international player and sometimes I was drunk. I was lucky there were no pictures. We are people and are old enough to take responsibility. But it’s private life,” the former Barcelona boss remarked.
“I don’t think the association has to be responsible about that,” he said. “We are people; we are old enough to take our responsibilities. But it’s the private life. You have to respect absolutely what other people do.
“I don’t like when people comment about my private life, I will not comment about the private life of other people.
“I have a lot of respect for Wayne Rooney, about his career, as a human being. Private life is the private life; I don’t have comments about that.
“I am responsible for what I do; it’s not the responsibility of Manchester City.”
Guardiola’s statements come barely 24 hours after Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, spoke in support of the embattled former Everton striker.
City and Guardiola will face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
