On the day hundreds took to the street to protest the excruciating living condition in the country, acting President Yemi Osinbajo has told Nigerians that the government hears them loud and clear.
The acting President spoke at consultative forum between the Economic Management Team and the Private Sector on the Economic Recovery Growth Plan, which is to be launched later this month.
“We hear you loud and clear, those who are on the streets protesting the economic situation and even those who are not, but feel the pain of economic hardship. We hear you loud and clear. You deserve a decent life and we are working night and day to make life easier,” Osinbajo said.
He, however, added: “Years of deterioration cannot be reversed overnight. Again it has to be said that it’s our business, it’s our duty to ensure that we put the Nigerian economy on the track of recovery.”
Flanked by a heavy police escort, demonstrators in Lagos and Abuja sang protest songs against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari has been in Britain since mid-January for unspecified medical checks and, with no indication of when he might return. Many Nigerians suspect his health is worse than officials admit.
The country is also mired in its first recession in 25 years and high inflation is driving up prices of basic goods.
