Actor Yul Edochie has spoken out against reports linking him to an alleged actor shot dead by police during a gun battle with kidnappers in Lagos.

Taking to his Instagram page on Wednesday, Yul urged netizens and bloggers to stop spreading false narratives about him.

Since the death of the alleged actor, it has been rumoured on social media that Yul was friends with him.

“I want to state it categorically here, the guy, he wasn’t my friend,” Yul said in a video, debunking the allegation.

Yul, who has been in Nollywood for nearly two decades, clarified that he had only encountered the individual once.

“I only saw this guy once, when I shot a movie for him,” he explained.

The actor recounted how a movie director contacted him for a shoot a few weeks ago, during which he met the said actor on set.

Yul said the alleged actor requested to take a picture with him, expressing his excitement at finally working with him.

“That’s the picture a lot of people are circulating and saying that this guy is my friend. He is not my friend,” he emphasised.

Yul issued a stern warning to those spreading the false information: “Whoever you are that is spreading this kind of stuff, I hope you can defend it in court because that is coming.”

In the light of the killing of the said man, actor Kanayo O. Kanayo cautioned the media, bloggers and the general public to be careful about labelling just anybody an actor, noting that it is damaging the movie industry’s reputation.

Last week, Lagos State Police Command announced that nine alleged kidnappers targeting high net-worth residents in the Ladipo area of the state had been killed.

The Command’s spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the suspects’ deaths resulted from the exchange of gunfire.
