Nollywood actress, Hilda Dokubo, has revealed that she gets a lot of questions about her hair, complexion and heritage.
The Cross River-native revealed this on Monday when she opened up about the pressures of being different on Instagram.
She wrote, “Daily, people suffer discrimination induced fear of varying degrees depending on the pressure from the one who considers him/herself superior. I survived it through childhood, teenage, young adult and now a full adult
“Have you ever imagined what it feels like to always have someone ask you… what is your other half? Which of your parent is white? How did you end up with this hair…”
Fellow actress, Juliet Ibrahim, made a similar statement on June 9 when she shared her experience with a man who told her that she is not ‘black’ enough because of the texture of her hair and her skin tone.
She wrote on Instagram,”I had a random conversation the other day with someone and it was appalling when he mentioned passively to me that he doesn’t see me as a #Blackwoman! He argued, you are not ‘black enough’ your skin isn’t dark enough, your hair not kinky enough. And thus my siblings and I do not ‘count’ as black.
“I am classified and recognized as a black woman, however, right amongst us Africans I’ll be referred to as a Half-Caste! This is the most derogatory term to describe a person of mixed race or mixed ethnicity.
“We are referred to as mixed-race or multi-racial! Mixed race people are no less black than their dark-skinned counterparts…”
