Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Army to “stop killing young #EndSARS protesters.”
Mrs Clinton waded into the bloodbath on Tuesday night via Twitter after footage of heavy gunfire on Lekki toll gate in Lagos went viral.
Masked men whom many identified by their uniform as soldiers stormed the toll gate which had become the stronghold of protesters and opened fire on them.
Clinton, a former US Secretary of State, called on the president to halt the killings.
“I’m calling on @mbuhari and the @hqnigerianarmy to stop killing young #EndSARS protesters. #StopNigeriaGovernment,” she tweeted.
The incident in which several persons were killed with many injured has generated outrage around the world.
The protesters refused to leave the toll gate despite a 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government.
They have been protesting against police brutality for two weeks.
