American film legend and animal activist, Doris Day, has died at the age of 97.
Her foundation, The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed that she died early on Monday in her California home.
She was known for her voice and acting skills which made her a top star in the 1950s and ’60s and among the most popular screen actresses in history.
Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a descendant of German immigrants to America.
She had only one child, record producer Terry Melcher, who died in 2004.
Doris Day received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 from President George Bush.
