Nigerian chess champion, Tanitoluwa Adewunmi, and his family have been gifted a new apartment after his feat at the New York State chess championship.
Adewumi won the state tournament from kindergarten through third grade after reportedly fleeing Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria.
The boy and his family left Nigeria in 2017 to seek asylum in a homeless shelter in Manhattan, US. They have been living there while their application for asylum pends.
The family have now got themselves a decent two-bedroom apartment near Adewumi’s current school with one year’s rent paid for by an anonymous donor.
“I want my mom’s cooking again!” Adewumi said as he admired the house.
Another donor also offered to supply furniture, sheets and towels to the house while another was said to be sending 100 chess books.
Also, the GoFundMe account raised for his family had generated over $200,000.
About three film companies are said to be vying to make movies about the chess champion.
