Pa Ayo Fasanmi elder statesman and a leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere died peacefully in Osogbo, Osun State capital on Wednesday night, his son Folabi said.
The prominent Yoruba leader died aged 94. He would have been 95 on September 27.
Folabi said in a statement announcing his father’s death: “The Second Republic senator who until his death was a leader of the Yoruba Socio Cultural Group, Egbe Afenifere (ILOSIWAJU YORUBA) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, passed on peacefully in Osogbo on Wednesday night.
“The burial arrangement will be announced by his immediate family in conjunction with his political associates and the South West governors.”
Fasanmi joined the Obafemi Awolowo-led Unity Party of Nigeria in 1978 and was a candidate in the Ondo State governorship primary election.
The late pharmacist lost the election to Adekunle Ajasin.
