Vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Peter Obi has said that the best way to fight corruption is to build strong institutions.
Mr Obi made this statement on Wednesday in Enugu at the 3rd South East Economic Summit tagged South East Nigeria: the Investment Destination.
The former Anambra State governor said that the fight against corruption should not be regarded as an economic policy.
Obi, who was emphatic that the new economic order is knowledge-based, called for the new order to be followed through education.
“We got the talent here, very intellectually endowed and resourceful people of all ages to rise to the occasion. We’re all hoping that things will change and the requisite infrastructure put in place, especially in support of education,” Obi said.
He added that despite Venezuela having large crude oil deposit, the country is presently in economic crisis and that the state of California which is without crude oil is the richest US state instead of Texas which has crude oil.
Drawing these comparisons, Obi said that it was not about mineral deposits, but about developing sound human resources that would utilise the abundant intellectual capital in the country.
MTN Chairman Paschal Dozie was the chairperson of the event which had in attendance Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Professor Barth Nnaji among others.
