Businessman and politician Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (APC/Anambra South) has died in London, United Kingdom.
The lawmaker died on Saturday morning, according to a top official of the APC in Anambra State who pleaded anonymity.
The official, a native of the same community as Ubah, said the senator slumped in London on Friday and went into a coma.
“This morning they confirmed to us that he has died,” he said.
A close family source said he died in a UK hospital where he went for an operation, reports Channels TV.
The businessman was elected senator in 2019 on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and re-elected in 2023.
In September 2022, gunmen made an attempt on Ubah’s life at Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The lawmaker’s convoy was targeted by the gunmen, leaving five persons including aides and security personnel dead. Ubah escaped in his bulletproof vehicle.
Earlier this year, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and indicated interest in contesting the governorship election of Anambra State next year.
In 2021, he contested the Anambra governorship election. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the poll.
Ubah’s death comes days after his campaign council was said to have donated a total of N71 million to the APC in Anambra State to bolster the party’s presence and strength in the state.
Two days earlier, the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, died aged 82.
