How Onyeka Onwenu’s death made Big Brother Naija’s Onyeka popular

Big Brother Naija’s Onyeka Chigbo saw her popularity jump among social media users on Wednesday following the death of the singer, songwriter, actress and broadcaster Onyeka Onwenu.

Ms Onyeka died on Tuesday night after performing at the 80th birthday party of the founder and chief executive officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals Stella Okoli in Lagos.

Known for her hit songs such as ‘Iyogogo,’ ‘One Love,’ ‘Ekwe,’ ‘You and I,’ ‘Falling In Love,’ and ‘Dancing in the Sun,’ Onyeka died at the age of 72.

As X users began paying tributes to Onyeka early Wednesday, fans of the Big Brother Naija housemate also started talking about her.

Onyeka, 28, walked into the Big Brother house on Sunday, July 28 with her elder sister Chizoba Chigbo who is 31 years old. They are natives of Anambra State.

Onyeka shares a close relationship with her siblings, particularly Chizoba with whom she forms the dynamic duo ‘Chekas’ on the No Loose Guard edition of Big Brother Naija.

Onyeka completed her primary and secondary education in Anambra State. Her early passion for dancing, swimming, yoga, and acting got her recognition and admiration from peers and teachers alike.

After finishing secondary school, she studied at Nnamdi Azikiwe University where she obtained a degree in law. This experience allowed her to refine her skills and further pursue her interests in acting and entrepreneurship.

Chizoba, on the other hand, likes reading, listening to music, hiking, and cooking. She is a graduate of Imo State University.

Onyeka and her sister and 13 other pairs are competing for Big Brother’s grand prize of N100 million.
