Freestyle wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye got married to her longtime lover Oladimeji Iyanda at a colourful wedding on Saturday in Ondo State one month after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Qed.ng learnt that the couple had been dating since 2016.
They held their traditional engagement at Adeleye Multipurpose Hall and Event Ltd before walking down the aisle at The Prophetic Church of Nigeria and Overseas. They had their reception at Christ Event Center, Akure, Ondo State.
Adekuoroye spoke with The Nation just before the wedding. She said, “We got to know each other and connected well ever since. Even though I had so many suitors, I won’t date anyone because of money. He has a genuine love for me. He is caring and has all the good qualities a lady will wish for in a man. He didn’t disturb my career but has been supportive since we started dating.
“People believe I’m going to marry a billionaire but what will be the essence if you marry such a person and ended up not having a happy home? Our relationship is not built on the material thing but true love and I thank God for making our togetherness a reality.”
Adekuoroye, 28, a native of Ondo State, competed in the women’s freestyle 53 kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a gold medal and at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships where she won a bronze medal. She won the silver medal at the women’s freestyle 55 kilograms 2017 World Wrestling Championships.
