The police have countered reports that the special investigation panel set up by the inspector-general of police Usman Baba to probe deputy police commissioner Abba Kyari has submitted its amended report.
Mr Kyari was suspended and placed under investigation after the FBI in the United States alleged his involvement in a $1.1m Internet fraud allegedly perpetrated by Abbas Ramon aka Hushpuppi and four others.
The FBI had also claimed that Kyari detained a co-conspirator of Hushpuppi at the latter’s behest for one month which enabled Hushpuppi to defraud a Qatari victim of over $1m.
PUNCH had quoted a source who said the four-man panel headed by the deputy IGP in charge of Force criminal investigations department, Joseph Egbunike, submitted its findings to the IGP on Monday.
It also reported that the panel submitted an amended report after the IGP rejected an earlier report for allegedly being too lenient on Kyari.
However, the police in a statement on Tuesday said the probe was still ongoing.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that the probe into the alleged indictment of DCP Abba Kyari by the FBI, being conducted by the NPF Special Investigation Panel (SIP), is still ongoing,” the statement read.
“Members of the public are enjoined to note that the panel has not submitted its report to the Inspector General of Police, as being wrongly reported in some news outlet and online platforms.
“The Force hereby reassures the public that the outcome of investigations by the probe panel would be communicated accordingly upon conclusion of the investigations.”
