President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has revealed that he agreed with his removal as the first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The 46-year-old confirmed the removal in a series of tweets on Thursday saying that his appointment expired after two years although he was appointed last year.
“By now, you must have seen an official statement from the events of today’s CAF Congress in Egypt. To reiterate; The term of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Vice-Presidents of the Confederation of African Football expires after two years, in line with Article 22(4) of the CAF statutes,” he started.
He said that he accepted the non-renewal of his position by the CAF president because it aligned with his views.
“My renewal was not proposed by the CAF President and I’m in total agreement with that decision as well. I accepted the decision of the President as it aligned with my own views, having considered matters surrounding the administration of African Football which has dovetailed into the Nigerian Football space. I’m still a member of the CAF Executive Committee though and I’ll continue to work to ensure that football on the continent gets its deserved value.
“It has been an excellent opportunity to serve as the Number Two football administrator on the continent and my commitment to the game is perpetual while my support for my colleagues in the Executive Committee remains steadfast. Hearty congratulations to Omari, Lekja and Danny on their new roles as 1st, 2nd & 3rd Vice-Presidents respectively,” his statement read.
Pinnick will be replaced by South Africa’s Danny Jordaan after serving as the football body‘s first vice-president since July 2018.
Pinnick’s exit means a reshuffling of Ahmad’s vice-presidents, with Constant Omari of DR Congo and Moroccan Faouzi Lekjaa moving up from second and third vice-president respectively.
Jordaan who played a key role at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will now act as third vice-president.
No reason was given for the removal of Pinnick by CAF President Ahmad, who signed an agreement with Fifa President Gianni Infantino on Thursday to confirm the appointment of Fifa Secretary General Fatma Samoura as a ‘General Delegate for Africa’.
