Former goalkeeper, television pundit and media officer of the Super Eagles Idah Peterside revealed on Tuesday that he nearly took his own life after his former wife left him.
The ex-footballer, who now pastors Christ Ambassadors Church in South Africa, said in a post on X that he struggled to bear the shame of his wife’s departure because he had just started the church at the time.
“I almost killed my self after my ex wife left me, the shame was too much I had just started a church and was just starting on Supersport,” he said. “Only God saw me through. I look back today and am very grateful to God.”
After his first wife left, Peterside married Iyenemi and did not have a child with her until 10 years later.
Peterside played in South Africa for Tembisa Classic FC and Moroka Swallows. Prior to that, he played for several teams in Nigeria including Enyimba, Sharks, Udoji United, BCC Lions, Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).
He was the first Nigerian football pundit on DSTV.
Peterside became born again in 1996 while playing for Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC). That same year he attended a bible school (Word of Faith Bible College) where he graduated with a diploma but continued to play.
