Abdulrahman Bello, a suspect accused of killing and dismembering Yetunde Lawal, a female student of the Kwara State College of Education, has denied any involvement in her death, claiming the incident was an accident.
Yetunde, 24, was reported missing on February 10, prompting her parents to file a report at a police station in Ilorin, Kwara State. Police investigations led to Bello’s arrest after the discovery of the student’s dismembered body.
In a video circulating online, Bello, who introduced himself as Mohammed, narrated his version of events. Speaking in Yoruba, the suspect, described as a Muslim cleric, claimed he met Yetunde on Facebook, and the two were in a relationship.
“The girl is Hafusa. She is my girlfriend; I met her on Facebook. I didn’t kill her. I am just a victim of circumstance,” Bello said.
According to him, Yetunde visited his home after attending an event earlier in the day.
“She told me they had an event at 1 pm after school that day. She got back after 3 pm. When she came, she told me she hadn’t eaten, so I went to get her food. However, she was gasping for breath when I got back,” Bello explained.
Bello alleged that Yetunde had earlier informed him of her asthma condition and that she died of an attack while he was away fetching food for her.
“I was in shock when she died, so I couldn’t cry out for help. I dismembered her body and disposed of it at the public refuse dump because I couldn’t think of any better way. I have never done this before. This is my first time,” he added.
Bello added that he was about to gain administration into Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.
