Actor and comedian, Ime Bishop, popularly known as Okon Lagos, has said that he does not regret saying prostitutes do not have dignity.
The 37-year-old insisted there is nothing wrong with his opinion in a chat with punchng.com
“The issue people had with what I said was that I likened rape to theft and that I said prostitutes do not have dignity. My assertion was to clarify the fact that raping a prostitute is theft and they don’t have dignity.
“My assertion is metaphorical. If I wanted to use a simile, I would say rape is like theft. Rape is taking a woman’s dignity without her consent. I don’t regret saying that prostitutes do not have dignity; no one would be proud to introduce themselves as a commercial sex hawker,” he said.
Earlier in May, Policemen in the Federal Capital Territory went on a raid of nightclubs, arresting women they accused of being sex workers.
Some of the women reported that they were raped in detention as condition for their bail.
The action of the policemen led to protest by women on the streets of Abuja and widespread condemnation on social media.
Reacting in a video posted on Instagram, Okon said sexual assault of sex workers couldn’t be classified as rape.
According to him, the policemen only stole from the women without paying for service (sex).
