Scottish-Nigerian actress Carolyna Hutchings has spoken about the racism she experienced while growing up in Nigeria as a mixed-race child.
In an interview with Arise TV, the 37-year-old revealed that she faced discrimination both at home and in school due to her skin colour and hair texture.
“As a mixed-race child raised by my grandmother in Nigeria, I experienced a lot of racism,” she said.
“I was bullied all through primary and secondary school, so I had to learn how to defend myself.”
Carolyna also recalled facing discrimination in her professional life despite her academic achievements.
“I have an MBA, an MSA in international law, and several professional certificates from Lagos Business School and the University of Lagos. I even have a doctorate,” she said.
“But as a beautiful, mixed-race woman who is articulate, I often got bashed in society. I also faced stigma for being a divorcee, but I have developed a thick skin.”
Carolyna began her acting career in 2004 with Deadly Care, introduced to Nollywood by Chico Ejiro through Rita Dominic.
She gained fame with roles in Deadly Kiss (2004), Missing Angel (2004) and Stalker (2016), where she starred alongside Jim Iyke and Nse Ikpe Etim.
After taking a break from the spotlight, she returned in 2022 as part of The Real Housewives of Lagos, marking her foray into reality television.
