Cartoonist Mustapha Bulama says he means no harm on the marriage of the president’s daughter Hanan Buhari following his controversial cartoon published on Sunday.
The cartoon depicted Nigeria’s first lady Aisha Buhari showing Nigerians pictures of her daughter’s wedding while they drown due to hardship.
“I mean no harm on the marriage of Hanan Buhari. I’m only doing my job. For the cartoon, it was just to show what Nigerians are feeling at this particular time,” he told BBC Pidgin on Wednesday.
The Daily Trust employee said he got dragged on social media for the cartoon, although he also got praises and encouragement to do more.
“Some people I think have ties with politicians insulted me on social media but I also got many people who praised me,” he said.
Mrs Buhari’s spokesman Aliyu Abdullahi had on Monday described the cartoon as “very unfair”.
Bulama said he was glad the office of the first lady reacted to his work which assures him that people in high places see his work. He said he hoped it would lead them to work harder for Nigerians.
“This is the first time I will get such response from a high place regarding my work and it shows they see and listen to us. I just hope we will inspire them to make life easier for people,” he said.
Hanan wedded Mohammed Turad last Friday in a low-key ceremony inside Aso Rock.
