Talk show host, Teju Babyface, has revealed that he did not win an award while he was actively into stand-up comedy.
The 39-year-old said this while speaking about how his mentors, Leke Alder and Sam Adeyemi influenced him, in an exclusive interview with QedTV on Tuesday in Lagos.
Mr Alder is a lawyer and renowned painter. Sam Adeyemi is the senior pastor of Daystar Christian Centre in Lagos.
The talk show host, with real name Gbadewonuola Olateju Oyelakin, said that he depended on his mentors for sound advice and counselling when his show stopped airing in 2014 due to lack of funds.
“I was an actor and acting didn’t work out even though I enjoyed early success. And then I was a comedian, even though I enjoyed success on that for many years but there were no chances to expand or grow beyond where comedy had brought me.
“So then it was the Teju Babyface Show on television and for once I seemed to have hit the goldmine. Everybody loved it. We won more awards than we had places to stalk them.
“I never won any award until we started Teju Babyface Show. As a comedian I never won any individual award. I was always nominated but I always lost out. So Teju Babyface Show finally let us know that we’ve started something that was new,” Teju said.
