Former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN), Omowunmi Akinnifesi, has revealed that she is still a virgin at 37.
In a video posted online to celebrate her birthday on December 4, Omowunmi explained that she made a covenant with God at age 18, the same year she won the MBGN title, to remain celibate until marriage.
“Personally, I had a covenant with God when I was 18 about keeping myself,” she said.
She clarified that while others might call it celibacy, she had “never done before.”
The businesswoman admitted that the decision wasn’t easy, especially as she had no one to guide her.
“I walked in shame for a very, very long time,” she confessed, recalling how difficult it was to talk about her choice with friends who often laughed at her when she did.
“I had friends I couldn’t talk to. When I finally spoke to them, they laughed at me.”
Adding to her challenges, the public scrutiny she faced included false rumors about her dating life.
Omowunmi shared that while these stories were hurtful, she let them slide because they helped mask the truth of her virginity. “I didn’t mind those stories because it helped mask the real me,” she said.
The beauty queen noted that it would be even harder for young women today to make the same choice, as society has become more open about sexuality.
“It would be harder now. Everyone is so open about their sexuality, and I can’t imagine what younger women choosing this path are going through,” she said.
She ended her video by expressing relief in finally sharing her story, saying, “It feels good to come out of the closet.”
