Saudi authorities have released Ibrahim Abubakar who was held in detention in a similar drug case to Zainab Aliyu.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had said during a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday that Abubakar would be released on Wednesday to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia.
However, new media to the president, Bashir Ahmad, revealed Abubakar’s release in a message on Twitter on Thursday.
“Saudi Authorities release Mallam Ibrahim Abubakar to the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah, KSA. He was arrested over alleged drug trafficking, the same offence as Zainab Habib Aliyu, who was also released recently,” Ahmad wrote.
Zainab’s release was secured on Tuesday after an outcry on her innocence in the alleged offence.
Zainab and Abubakar were both held in Saudi Arabia after illegal dosage of tramadol was found in a bag labeled in Aliyu’s name at a Saudi airport.
It is not known if Abubakar travelled alone to Saudi Arabia before his arrest.
