Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabbed the limelight on a day Paul Pogba made his long-awaited Manchester United return.
The Swedish striker scored twice for Jose Mourinho’s men as they eased past Southampton at a buoyant Old Trafford in the Premier League’s first test of Friday night football.
Pogba was making his second United debut following his £89m move from Juventus while Ibrahimovic was making his home debut.
But it was the 34-year-old who stole the show, first heading home Wayne Rooney’s cross in the 36th minute before slotting home from the penalty spot seven minutes into the second half.
Despite Ibrahimovic’s double, it was Frenchman Pogba that was named Man of the Match for his outstanding display in the game.
“If the team does good the individual does good always. I tried to do what I’m best at, create chances and help my team-mates and then scoring goals,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports after the game.
“So far three goals in total. I’m happy for the team, two games, two wins. We’re becoming better and better, it was the first game at home and we won it. It’s a good start.
“We need to get used to winning because the mental part is also important. Not only on the physical part so we’re happy, we’re happy for the three points and the first game at home also, we need to settle in – the rest will come by itself.”
