Veteran actor Pete Edochie’s iconic portrayal of Okonkwo in the TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart will be revisited, with British actor Idris Elba set to take on the role.
Idris who will also serve as an executive producer, is partnering with Gina Carter under their newly established production company, 22Summers to bring the story to life.
Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel, first published in 1958 marks his debut and is the first installment of his acclaimed African Trilogy, followed by ‘No Longer at Ease’ and ‘Arrow of God’.
‘Things Fall Apart’ explores the intricacies of pre-colonial life in Igboland and the transformative impact of European missionaries and colonial forces in the late 19th century.
The novel was first adapted for the screen in a 1971 film and later as a mini-series in 1987, where Pete Edochie’s portrayal of Okonkwo—the fearless wrestling champion of Umuofia—cemented his status as a celebrated actor.
Other casts includes, Nkem Owoh, Sam Loco Efe, Nduka Eya, Funso Adeolu, Elizabeth Okaro Adaeze and Osemeka Onwuegbuzia Unoka.
According to Variety, the upcoming TV series adaptation is being developed by American production studio A24.
Idris described the project as focusing on Okonkwo, one of literature’s most compelling figures whose struggle to uphold his cultural heritage and authority amidst the disruptive forces of British colonisation spirals into a poignant clash.
His relentless determination, both a strength and a tragic flaw, epitomises the struggle between resilience and adaptability in the face of inevitable change.
