Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has promised to clear all backlog of salaries owed by the state government to workers before December 2019.
Bello made this promise on Friday in Kaduna after the Northern State Governors Forum (NSGF).
He said that the backlog of salaries owed civil servants was incurred by the previous administration and passed on to him.
Bello said he made efforts to remove ghost works from the state government’s payroll.
The governor said the previous administration had applied for N80.5 billion from the Federal Government.
“What is owed by the previous administration is exactly what is owed now. Under my watch, I’m not owing a single dime but inherited liability which Mr President has approved. As soon as we draw that we shall clear all the arrears,” he said.
According to him, the President had approved N50. 8 billion out of the money but he decided to withdraw only N20 billion.
Details of how the money was used, he said, was published in national dailies including how it was shared with the local governments.
