Actor Kenneth Okonkwo has hinted at declaring his support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, after resigning from the All Progressive Congress(APC), saying that he is now “Obi-centric”.
The actor-turned lawyer stated this in a recent interview with Arise TV where he responded to allegations by APC supporters that fans of Peter Obi are leveraging empty internet sensationalism that cannot translate to actual votes at the polls.
In the interview, the Living in Bodange actor argued that internet sensationalism started with the APC in 2015 prior to President Muhammadu Buhari’s assumption of office.
Speaking on where his support lies ahead of the 2023 elections, Kenneth Okonkwo described himself as “Obi-centric.”
“I’m not contemplating on joining any party yet. A northern friend from Kano told me to join the Obi movement. This is a northern Muslim talking. Saying northern Muslims won’t support Christians is a false statement,” he said.
“That is the problem with bringing Octogeneraians to manage your party and the affairs of government. I’m Obi-centric but I’ve not joined any party. It’s the ticket that gave me the youthful energy needed to change Nigeria.”
On July 11, the 53-year-old announced he resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the decision of the ruling party to field a Muslim-Muslim presidential candidate for the 2023 elections
The resignation came a day after APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu announced former Borno State governor Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
