The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the announcement of results for the March 9 governorship/state assembly elections in Imo State.
The commission suspended the announcemmet on Monday morning after a fight broke out between party agents at the commission’s office along Port harcourt road in Owerri.
The fracas began at 5:30 am as results from Ideato South local government area were to be announced.
The Imo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agent, Uche Onyegucha, objected that the results should not be announced.
“All the electoral officers were taken to a particular place to write the results. Also, the party agents were driven away by the agents of the government and the results were written in favour of one candidate,” Onyegucha alleged.
In reaction, the Democratic Alternative (DA) party agent, Paschal Onwukaike, disagreed with Onyegucha, leading to a loud argument and fight between both agents.
Electoral materials were torched in the process.
Security operatives at the INEC office have taken the two agents into custody.
