The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday suspended all electoral processes in Rivers State, citing cases of violence, abductions and intimidation.
In a statement on Sunday, the commission said it was suspending the electoral process in the state due to widespread disruption of the election conducted on Saturday.
INEC officials and ad-hoc staff had said that their safety was not guaranteed, prompting them to all assemble at the INEC headquarters.
The commission, in the statement, also said it had set up a committee to assess the situation and report back within 48 hours.
Policemen and soldiers had earlier clashed at the main gate of the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, climaxing an already tense electoral process in the state.
