Actress Iyabo Ojo has publicly criticised Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti for siding with the controversial social media influencer known as VeryDarkMan.
The feud escalated after Seun spoke in support of VeryDarkMan following the latter’s arrest by the police on Sunday, June 30 on the allegation of defaming another influencer Ashmusy.
Iyabo revealed her grievances on social media, highlighting how VeryDarkMan had accused her of receiving N65 million to seek justice for the singer Mohbad who died under controversial circumstances. She clarified that her pursuit of justice was self-funded.
The actress also said that her partner, Paulo Okoye, had initially advised her to drop the case, only to later realise what she referred to as the true nature of VeryDarkMan. She drew a line between insults and defamation, insisting that she had been wronged by the latter.
Earlier, Seun, in an Instagram video, expressed disappointment with Paulo who asked him to choose between him (Paulo) and VDM.
“I have a good relationship with Paulo, but that doesn’t give him the right to order me publicly,” he said.
The Afrobeat star also criticised Iyabo for advocating arrests, labelling her an oppressor trying to stifle free expression. Seun argued that while he didn’t support VeryDarkMan’s actions, he opposed the use of the police to silent dissent.
Seun also stressed the importance of mutual respect between the younger generation and elders, asserting that respect must be earned. He defended VeryDarkMan as a necessary voice against societal injustice.
“For me, VeryDarkMan is a necessity, He can confront personal issues that I don’t know how to. VeryDarkMan mobilises people against those who enable corrupt politicians, those with the spirit of politicians who use their influence to oppress the powerless,” he said.
