Joke Silva under fire for advocating gender equality in Nigerian politics

Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva, has been criticised by some misogynists for advocating gender equality in Nigerian politics.

It all started with a harmless image the Amazing Grace actress uploaded on Instagram on Friday showing her during a recent campaign supported by Ford Foundation and wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode.

The 55-year-old is seen in the picture holding a sign that reads “Gender inequality is when women account for more than half of our population but we have 109 male senators and 7 female senators.”

While some of her followers agreed with her sentiment, a majority criticised the University of Lagos graduate over her opinion on the matter.

@4tunestylz said “Oh please get over yourselves @ajokesilva if you want to change that, contest an election and see if the same women will vote for you, they can’t just make you a senator because you feel some kind of entitlement, I am sick and tired of women this ,women that!!!”

@joepraiz wasn’t interested in what the actress had to say. He declared: “Who is concern about that now; we want a good economy and better JOB opportunities. ..ma, d women in time past who were in both the house of assembly and Rep wat did they do..E.g Madam Ete (Fmr speaker of d House of rep) etc ..biko let’s agitate for a better Nigeria ..that’s d primary objective; later d gender equality theory can follow…biko (sic)”.

Another critic insisted that gender equality is an excuse women use so they wouldn’t work before they get anything; arguing that women get the best jobs and positions as soon as they claim gender inequality is meted out against them.
