Former President Goodluck Jonathan, and presidential candidates Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu were among guests on Wednesday at the 70th birthday celebration of Bishop Matthew Kukah.
Also present at the Abuja event was Tinubu’s running mate, Kashim Shettima and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal chaired the occasion. He described Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, as a man with an undying love for the country.
He also commended Kukah for his strong belief in the possibility of a new Nigeria.
Tambuwal said that although Kukah’s criticism of the the nation’s bad governance have been controversial, he (Kukah) believed Nigeria could and would come out of the doldrums of failed political leadership.
Tambuwal, represented by a former governor of Imo State and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; noted further that Kukah’s love for a united Nigeria has remained unsurpassed.
“His (Kukah’s) writings over the years have become controversial and have drawn the ire of powers that be, but what is not in doubt is his undying love for Nigeria and Nigerians, and his belief in the possibility of a new Nigeria where justice and equity reigns,” he said.
