President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a substantive director-general of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to replace Prof. Armstrong Idachaba.
Minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed announced in a statement on Friday that Balarabe Ilelah had been appointed as Idachaba’s replacement.
Mr Ilelah’s appointment is for a tenure of five years in the first instance, the statement said.
The change in leadership comes amid furore surrounding the suspension of Twitter in the country.
Idachaba’s NBC had ordered radio and television stations to deactivate their Twitter accounts following the suspension of the social media platform.
The commission had also asked all social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers in Nigeria to apply for broadcast licence.
Idachaba was appointed acting head after Modibbo Kawu was suspended for alleged financial impropriety in February 2020.
