The first civilian governor of Abia State Ogbonnaya Onu has died aged 72.
Onu died in an Abuja hospital, BBC Igbo reports, quoting a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The source, who did not want to be named for lacking authorisation to speak on the matter, said, “It is true that Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu is dead but it is up to his family to speak about it.”
Onu was the minister of science and technology in the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He hailed from Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Onu was elected as the first governor of Abia State in 1991 as he was also the first president of the Association of Nigerian Governors.
He was the chairman of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) where he won the presidency in 1999.
He remained in the ANPP party until it merged with the CPC and ACN to form the APC.
