Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

The announcement, made on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation Dotun Oyelade marks a pivotal moment for the ancient Oyo Kingdom.

According to Mr Oyelade, the appointment follows extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo.

“Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi after thorough consultations and divinations, and his appointment has been approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement read.

Commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs Ademola Ojo noted that the decision brings an end to the controversies that followed the passing of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who died on April 22, 2022, after a reign spanning five decades.

“This decision brings an end to the socio-legal controversies surrounding the succession process since the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We urge all residents of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and celebrate this significant moment,” Mr Ojo said.

The government expressed optimism about the new monarch’s reign, emphasising its potential to promote peace, unity, and development in the Oyo Kingdom.

“We are optimistic that his reign will foster harmony, prosperity, and development for the people of Oyo,” Oyelade added.
