Former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi on Friday joined Labour Party.
Mr Obi registered with the party in his Agulu Ward in Anambra, a source within his camp told Qed.ng.
An official statement is expected later.
Labour Party confirmed via Twitter that Obi joined the party.
“As earlier reported, H.E Peter Obi Joins Labour Party of Nigeria, @PeterObi registered as a member of the party on Friday in his ward in Anambra State.
He is expected to pick the presidential form and contest the party’s presidential primary election next Tuesday,” the tweet said.
This is coming hours after the presidential aspirant announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Obi informed the national chairman of the PDP in a letter dated May 24 that his withdrawal from the party took effect on May 20.
Obi tweeted a copy of the letter on Wednesday. “It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions,” the letter reads.
“My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs,” he added.
