Shanty Town director Dimeji Ajibola is dead

Movie director Dimeji Ajibola, best known for his work on the series Shanty Town, has died.

Dimeji died on Sunday after battling an undisclosed illness.

His death was confirmed by his colleague Samuel Olatunji on social media.

“Dimeji Ajibola was my client and friend. So sad to hear this news. Rest in peace to a great guy! Sad Sunday as the director of Shanty Town passed away,” Samuel wrote alongside a photo of the late director.

Celebrated as a visionary in the entertainment industry, Dimeji was known for his ability to merge traditional storytelling with cutting-edge digital art.

His expertise encompassed film, animation, visual effects (VFX), virtual worlds and interactive media, setting him apart as a creative force in contemporary African cinema.

Dimeji studied filmmaking and cinematography at the New York Film Academy, advanced character animation at Animation Mentor in San Francisco, and visual effects at VFXLearning.

As CEO and technical director of Flipsyde Studios Ltd., the deceased built a reputation for innovation and excellence.

His groundbreaking 2012 film Hoodrush, recognised as Nigeria’s first urban musical film, highlighted his ability to integrate complex narratives with rich musical elements.

Hoodrush earned multiple accolades, including Best Movie at the 2012 Green Me Film Festival in Germany, Best Actor and Soundtrack at the Nollywood Movies Awards, and Best Supporting Actor at the AMAA Awards.
