Former governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello has presented himself before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This comes months after he was declared wanted in April for shunning invitations for questioning and resisting arrest.
A statement on Wednesday by his media office said he decided to meet with the EFCC after consultations with his family, legal team and political allies.
Bello’s spokesman Ohiare Michael said in the statement, “It is our hope that the Commission will be as professional as necessary and respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Ohiare added that the details of Bello’s engagement with the operatives of the anti-graft agency would be disclosed later.
The EFCC unsuccessfully tried to arrest Bello on April 17 at his residence in Abuja.
The former governor was whisked away by his successor Governor Usman Ododo after hours of standoff.
Bello has not been seen in public since the incident.
EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede told a press conference that he made personal efforts to invite the former governor to respond to investigations regarding his alleged involvement in laundering over N80 billion.
“On my honour, I put a call to him to honour him as a former governor. He said, ‘I can’t come,’ claiming that a certain lady has surrounded the EFCC with over 100 Journalists to embarrass or intimidate him and all that stuff. I said if that is your fear, I will make you come directly to my floor. I will invite my operatives to interrogate you in my own office. What could be more honourable than that? Do you know what he said? ‘Can’t they come to my village?’” he said.
