Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has called for stronger economic ties between Kano and China to boost trade, investment and cultural exchange between the two regions.
The governor made the call on Thursday while receiving the Chinese Ambassador, Dunhai Yu, in his office.
According to him, the meeting underscores the state government’s commitment to fostering greater cooperation and investment opportunities between Kano and China.
Yusuf highlighted Kano State’s strategic position as a commercial hub, offering investors access to raw materials, a large market and significant economic potential.
He acknowledged China’s economic leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s economy, including trade, investment, infrastructure development and financial assistance.
The governor noted that bilateral trade between China and Nigeria reached $22.6 billion in 2023, with Kano benefiting substantially from the partnership.
The governor disclosed plans to introduce a five-year investment strategy to attract Chinese investors and provide incentives to sustain long-term investments in Kano State.
He also stressed the importance of educational collaboration, urging China to expand its scholarship programmes for Nigerian students.
The Chinese envoy expressed gratitude for the warm reception, describing Kano State as a key economic and cultural center in West Africa.
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Kano, particularly in agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and education.
