Ahmad Abdullahi, a friend of the Sani family in Kano who lost a member on September 16, has said that the deceased told her Chinese lover she was no longer interested in the relationship.
Ummukulthum, fondly called Ummita and Ummu, was dating Chinese national Geng Quanrong before her death. The Chinese allegedly slit her throat at her family house.
Abdullahi told BBC Pidgin that he is usually at Ummu’s house because he takes the family as his.
He said on that fateful day, he and Ummu’s brother stepped out to grab dinner around 9:35pm and by the time they returned the incident had happened.
“Geng was her longtime boyfriend, even before she married they were together. Everybody in the house knows him,” he said.
“What I know is that they were having issues lately and she told him she was no longer interested in the relationship and he got angry,” Abdullahi said.
He added that Geng was caught trying to flee from the scene. The Chinese is reported to have initially fled before returning to take his car.
Ummu died even before they could get her to a nearby UMC hospital as she lost so much blood, Abdullahi noted.
Geng is currently in police custody, yet to be arraigned.
