The University of Calabar (UNICAL) on Wednesday debunked claims that the alleged kidnapper John Ewa alias John Lyon is a graduate of the institution.
The university’s registrar Gabriel Egbe said in a statement that reports claiming John Lyon is an alumnus of UNICAL are fallacious.
John Lyon was arrested in connection with kidnapping activities by the Bayelsa State Police Command and was subsequently paraded before the media.
“The said John Ewa was never a student of the university, neither did he graduate from the institution.
“We urge members of the public to discountenance any information linking John Ewa to our prestigious university,” Egbe said in the statement.
Bayelsa State Police Commissioner Ben Okoli on Monday said John Lyon was a cleaner at a new generation bank.
According to the police boss, Lyon and his gang were allegedly involved in the kidnap of top bankers, businessmen and prominent persons.
“John Ewa, 30 years, aka John Lyon, a native of Eruan community in Boki LGA, Cross River State, known for flamboyant lifestyle on social media, a former cleaner with a new generation bank, confessed to have collected $10,000 (TenThousand US Dollars) from the ransom collected in the kidnap of Danjuma Omeje,” he said.
